1. How do I adopt a pet?

Adopt a Pet Program makes available friendly pets at minimal cost. The Animal Shelter is located at 4213 Luella Avenue. The office hours are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Dogs and cats are available for adoption after a holding period of three (3) working days. There is a $50 dollar adoption fee and you must prepay for the spaying/neutering of the animal as well as a rabies vaccination. Pets are always available for adoption. 2. What can I do about possums or raccoons in my yard?

If you are having problem with possums or raccoons you can request a trap from the Animal Control Division. You simply set the trap and upon capturing a pest, give Animal Control a call and they will be happy to come remove the trap along with the pest. It is a very humane way of getting rid of any pest in your yard. Contact Animal Control at 281-478-7274.

3. How many dogs or cats are allowed at one residence?

A total of 3 cats and dogs are allowed for each single residence. That could be two cats and one dog, or two dogs and one cat or any combination thereof, but no more than a total of three are allowed.

4. Is the keeping of livestock allowed in Deer Park?

Pigs and hogs shall not be kept under any circumstances within the city. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep, own, maintain or possess any livestock within the city closer than 150 feet to the exterior limits of any dwelling, unless the area involved is greater than five acres. To keep such animal, the area of open land available to the animal must exceed one-half acre per horse and two acres per head of any other kind of livestock. There shall be an exception for four-hour residential birthday parties and permitted fairs, carnivals and circuses. (Ordinance No. 3240)

5. Am I required to license my dog or cat?

Persons owning, keeping or having in their possession a dog or cat six months of age or older are required to obtain an annual license from the Humane Department. Such license shall be obtained between January 1 and April 1 of each year, at a cost of $10 per animal. If the license is not obtained until after April 1, the cost shall be $15. The additional fee provided for in this section shall not apply to dogs or cats brought into the city after April 1, provided a license for such dog or cat is obtained within 30 days after such dog's or cat's arrival in the city.

This rule does not apply to dogs duly and properly trained to aid or assist physically disabled persons when any such dogs are actually being used by such persons for the purpose of aiding or assisting such person in going from place to place.

6. Are residents allowed to keep chickens and other fowl within the city limits?

According to Sec. 14-27 of the City of Deer Park Code of Ordinances - No person shall keep or possess on any lot upon which such person resides more than ten fowl at any one time, and all structures or enclosures used for the housing or keeping of fowl and all runs and fenced yards devoted exclusively to the use of raising fowl shall be of such size that no more than one fowl is kept per ten square feet of such pens, houses, runs or yards. All fowl shall be kept within such enclosures at all times.

All enclosures and buildings in which any fowl is kept or permitted to remain in within the city shall be kept in reasonably clean and sanitary conditions and shall be disinfected and deodorized at least one a week.

1. Where do I go to obtain a building permit?

2. Do I have to pull a permit to perform electrical work at my home?

Deer Park's Code of Ordinances does not allow a homeowner to perform their own electrical work. A registered electrician must pull the permit and perform the work. Even simple work such as installing new outlets will require a permit. This is to ensure that things are performed according to the correct electrical codes and to ensure your families safety. 3. Do I need to pull a permit to do plumbing work at my home?

Yes a permit will always be necessary, although we recommend that a licensed plumber do the work for you, homeowners are allowed to pull their own permits and perform their own work. Visit our permit page for more information.

4. What do I need to bring in with me when I pull a building permit?

When pulling any type of building permit (except for interior remodel) you will need to bring in the site survey of your property. Your site survey can be found with the closing papers of your house. In the event you can't find your site survey, in most cases, a drawing (made to scale) that shows your property lines, dimensions, easements, as well as driveways and buildings can be submitted.. Our building official will need the site survey, or drawing, to verify that no easements or building lines are being encroached and that all codes will be met.

5. What are the requirements for a storage building / shed?

6. What are the requirements for building a fence?

1. How do I request Code Enforcement Action or a suspected violation complaint with the City?

In emergency situations involving activities which must be stopped immediately to prevent irreparable harm, please contact Development Services during office hours or the police (911). On evenings, weekends, and holidays dial 911. For non-emergencies, during regular business hours, contact the Code Enforcement Officers at 281-478-7270 or 281-478-7254. You will need to provide us with the address of the alleged violation and have a clear description of the alleged violation.

1. What is a Comprehensive Plan?

A Comprehensive Plan is a written document formally adopted by the local legislature that contains goals, objectives, and strategies for the future development and conservation of the community. A Comprehensive Plan is a road map that guides a municipality's decision related to its future growth and development. It expresses the vision, goals, strategies, and policies of a city.

2. What is the purpose of the Plan?

The purpose of the Comprehensive Plan is to function as a general policy guide for future development. It should be used in conjunction with other land use planning tools such as site development, subdivision and zoning ordinances. The Comprehensive Plan should be used by appointed and elected officials and City Staff as a guide to all major decisions affecting growth and development with the City of Deer Park.

3. Why should I get involved?

The Comp Plan is a basically a 20 year plan, in such, the changes to Deer Park won't happen over night. Some changes could take up to 20 years to make happen, we are just setting out the plan of how we hope Deer Park will be one day. More parks, walking trails, landscaping along Center Street, moving utility lines, etc. But this is a great way for you to have a voice in how the future of Deer Park will be for future generations, including your children and grandchildren. Maybe you plan to retire and live in Deer Park for the rest of your life? If so then you should have a voice in what you want that future to look like. It is beneficial to the City, as a whole, to have citizens involved in this process.

2. How do I go about getting a culvert installed in the open ditch in my front yard?

Fill out the Culvert Request Form and submit it to the public works department. After your information is reviewed by the Engineering Department you will be contacted with information concerning what size culvert needs to purchased. Please do not purchase any culvert material until after we contact you. After the culvert material has been purchased and delivered at your home, contact the Public Works Department and a work order will be issued for our Street Maintenance crew to install the culvert at no charge to the resident.

1. Who do I call for a water leak?

2. Where does our drinking water come from?

Deer Park gets surface water from Trinity River via Lake Livingston. This water is purchased from the City of Houston through the Coastal Water Authority. The City of Houston provides an assessment bimonthly of the water that comes from the reservoir, located north of Lynchburg Landing. The water quality assessment aids in planning the proper treatment of the water. Besides surface water, the City of Deer Park maintains three wells on standby. These wells could be used on an emergency basis if the raw water supply should be interrupted for any reason. These wells draw water from the Gulf Coast Aquifer.

3. What should I do if I experience sewer problems?

Before you call a plumber, always give the Public Works Department a call. We will send our sewer maintenance crew out to check the sewer main. It is possible the problem could be a blockage in the sewers main line. If that is the case our crews will clear the line and alleviate the problem therefore saving you the cost of hiring a plumber. Give us a call and let us check it out. If the sewer problem is on the cities side we will fix the problem. If the problem is on the homeowners side we will notify you and inform you that, yes, you need to call a plumber.
