Station I was built in 1956, and was labeled the “Central Station” as subsequent stations were built. For many years this station served as the administrative station and housed the Director of Emergency Services, Fire Chief and city clerical staff. In 1976, an additional apparatus bay was added to accommodate newer and larger equipment. Currently the office area houses the station officers, executive branch officers, department secretaries and fire marshal inspectors. Monthly department business meetings and weekly classroom training drills continue to be held at the station. The meeting room is often used by our local law enforcement for drills and classroom instruction.
The department’s history can be found at this station as many of the awards, trophies and memorabilia the department has received of its 60 years of service is on display in the meeting room. The office hallway exhibits the Hall of Chiefs and displays all of the 16 individuals that have served as Fire Chief over the past 60 years. The meeting room walls honor those members who have achieved special awards for their service, dedication and honor to the department.
It is rumored that there is a ghost at station 1. Rarely seen these days, but still lurking.
